Here’s What 11 Women Look Like Wearing Katy Perry’s $7 CoverGirl Lipstick

Katy Perry gets that you’re bored with your look. And, really, if there’s anyone who knows that struggle, it’s the woman who has changed her hair color so many times, she’s got nothing left to try (except gray—she’ll never do that). “I ran out of colors of the rainbow!” she says. “I felt like I didn’t have much more to experiment with.”

Enter then her next project—and new beauty accessory: A line of 11 demi-matte lipsticks called the Katy Kat Collection, which she worked closely with CoverGirl to create. “It’s all very Tumblr-inspired,” she told us at yesterday’s launch party for the line. “People are experimenting and playing, they don’t just want to put on pink lipstick anymore.”

Hear, hear! It’s apparent from the shades that they’re meant to be fun. Among a few classic reds and nudes, there are bright purples, coral—even black. The collection doesn’t officially launch until June (although you can pre-order them at walmart.com), but we got our hands on the shades early, and asked 11 of our staffers to test them out. The general consensus: Fireworks. Scroll down for their honest reviews—and insight from Perry!

The Lipstick: Pink Paws, a light pink (“I wanted to make sure I still included some classics but gave room for people to experiment,” says Perry.)

Who Tried It: Kate Friedman, editorial fellow

What She Thought: “I wear minimal makeup to work, so the idea of wearing lipstick was a little intimidating. But this color was soft enough to make me feel put together in a way that wasn’t too distracting.”

Would She Wear It Again? “I won’t wear it all the time, but I’m keeping this at my desk for a quick pop of color whenever I need it.”

The Lipstick: Cosmo Kitty, a vibrant purple (“When I was coloring my hair a lot, that was my accessory,” says Perry. “Now that I’m not, this is the main statement.”)

Who Tried It: Danielle Odiamar, social media contributor

What She Thought: “I respect Katy Perry’s wacky, colorful style, so I’m glad that was represented in this color. The pale lilac undertones didn’t wash me out and the matte effect didn’t look stiff or crusty. I did have to put on a few coats to make it look opaque enough, though. But overall, I’m actually pretty blown away by how well it stayed and how long it lasted. After six hours, lunch, a snack, and several glasses of water, it looked like I just put it on.”

Would She Wear It Again? “Yes. I usually invest in pricey lipsticks, but Katy Perry might have just converted me.”

The Lipstick: Maroon Meow, a deep berry with cool undertones

Who Tried It: Jenae Holloway, special projects editor

What She Thought: “Not all reds work for my brown skin tone, so I was surprised that this one matched perfectly and took my look from 0 to 100 real quick. I love wearing neutral clothes, so this made me feel bold and hella edgy.”

Would She Wear It Again? “Yup—finding the right red is hard enough. Never putting this down!”

The Lipstick: Crimson Cat, a classic red (“I’d probably put Hillary Clinton in this one,” says Perry. “It might be a little too red. But whatever she’s going to be president. She can do what she wants.”)

Who Tried It: Lindsay Schallon, senior digital beauty editor

What She Thought: “I’ve tried a lot of matte lipsticks, and most are so drying I can barely stand to keep them on longer than 30 minutes. But because this one is a demi-matte, it has a velvety finish without the uncomfortable feeling that your lips are peeling off.”

Would She Wear It Again? “I’ll definitely add this into my rotation. I wear about 10 different lipsticks on the reg. Apart from how easy it glided on—major key considering my makeup usually gets applied in a cab—I thought the crimson paired nicely with my pale skin and red hair.”

The Lipstick: Sphynx, a medium nude

Who Tried It: Julianne Carell, associate digital beauty editor

What She Thought: “I live in nude lipstick. Not all of them are flattering, but this one suits my olive complexion really well. It honestly felt like nothing was even on my lips.”

Would She Wear It Again? “Considering I’m a lipstick hoarder, I’ll 100 percent be keeping this one in my stash.”

The Lipstick: Magenta Mix, a hot pink

Who Tried It: Emily Kemp, associate digital designer

What She Thought: “I tend to choose shades that rough up my beachy blond hair and blue eyes—meaning anything but pink—but for some reason this made me feel super edgy. It also could be the fact that after I applied this, I threw on my leather jacket and Stan Smiths. Still, I think the shade inspired me.”

Would She Wear It Again? “Yes. I’m never writing off pink as boring ever again.”

The Lipstick: Coral Cat, a coral orange-pink

Who Tried It: Irene Hwang, accessories assistant

What She Thought: “I never ever wear coral lipsticks, so I was shocked this worked with my skin tone. It was an unexpected surprise.”

Would She Wear It Again? “Not an exaggeration: This is now my go-to color for the summer.”

The Lipstick: Perry Panther, a blue-based black (“I love that finally in the market, there’s a black lipstick,” says Perry. “Everyone on Tumblr is wearing it. It’s a fashion moment.”)

Who Tried It: Lauren Chan, associate fashion writer

What She Thought: “It’s so hard to find a black lipstick in a drugstore—trust me, I’ve looked! I liked that although the lipstick is dark, it’s not thick or heavy. In fact, you have to apply a few coats to get a jet-black look. Queue ‘Dark Horse’!”

Would She Wear It Again? “I would wear this out for a night of drinks and dancing—definitely not to the office; I got some weird stares—but it’s smudge-prone and would need to be sealed in with another product.”

The Lipstick: Catoure, a mauve brown

Who Tried It: Michelle Fernandez, software engineer

What She Thought: “It applied smoothly and gave me that matte coverage I love without drying out my lips. In fact, they felt moisturized and soft all day.”

Would She Wear It Again? “Yes! Since this shade was one of the more neutral colors of the bunch, it was easy to wear. But I still felt like it gave me a small touch of Katy Perry edge.”

PHOTO: Emily Kemp

The Lipstick: Kitty Purry, a lilac (“I named this one Kitty Purry because my cat’s name is Kitty Purry; she’s kind of my alter ego,” says Perry. “I wear this one all the time.”)

Who Tried It: Christina Draper, credits editor

What She Thought: “I thought it was nice change-up from my usual go-to bright and bold lipsticks. I also liked that the color was closer to a lilac than a standard pink. The bad part is I noticed it left a Vaseline-like taste in my mouth.”

Would She Wear It Again? “Definitely not wearing this every single day, but I’d choose it again when I’m in the mood for a lighter vibe.”

The Lipstick: Cat Call, a bright pink

Who Tried It: Meg Clark, social media manager

What She Thought: “The texture was surprisingly smooth compared to most mattes—no flaky spots invited to this party. The best part? It didn’t budge all day—not even after inhaling a pile of pad Thai for lunch.”

Would She Wear It Again? “Oh, totally. I wear bold, matte lipstick basically every day, so obviously I was going to love this.”
